There is something sacred about falling asleep. We don’t normally think of it this way, because sleep feels automatic, but it is one of the most profound acts of trust we perform every day. We surrender control, awareness, and safety. We let go of consciousness and place ourselves in the hands of Someone who keeps watch.
Scripture says God “gives to His beloved sleep” (Ps 127:2). It is the picture of a Father guarding His child’s rest. And the night has always been one of the times when God speaks—not loudly, not dramatically, but tenderly, in the place where we are finally unguarded.
Dreams are one of the oldest languages of God. In the Bible, dreams appear everywhere: in patriarchs, prophets, kings, the Holy Family, the apostles, saints, and even the enemy camp. God uses dreams to guide, heal, reveal, warn, strengthen, and awaken the heart.
